Smartphone Nation: Do You Suffer From Nomophobia?

(CBS Radio) — Today, there is a medical term for nearly every illness, phobia, and disease — and nomophobia is no exception.

People all over the world have logical and illogical fears, however, when the fear starts to dominate your life and causes intense anxiety, it becomes a diagnosable phobia.

Nomophobia is the fear of being “unplugged” from your cellular device.

The phobia can be triggered by losing your phone, not being able to check your social media accounts, reduced battery life/dead battery, or being in a “dead spot” (loss of network coverage.)

While this phobia may sound silly, it is a medically recognized condition. Because of our constant “need” to always be connected, and always check our social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, many Smartphone users panic if they cannot obtain the information that they need from their mobile devices — the second that they attempt to use their phone.

If you’re worried that you may suffer from Nomophobia, consciously attempt to limit the amount of times and the duration that you check your phone daily. If that doesn’t work, talk to your health care provider about other possible ways you can reduce your phobia.
